The Graduate Record Examination which is more popularly known asGRE is a standardized test which assesses a candidate’s quantitative, verbal, reading and writing competencies for seeking admission to Masters or Doctoral program across the globe. The GRE score is generally accepted by renowned universities in the USA, Canada, UK, Europe, ANZ region, etc. for getting admission to the Master’s program.
The GRE exam is administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS). ETS has designed the exam pattern in such a way which helps in measuring the mathematical, verbal, critical thinking and analytical power of a test-taker. Aspirants who wish to pursue an MS degree from a foreign university generally opt to take the GRE.
The GRE exam is divided into 3 sections:
- Analytical Writing
- Verbal Section
- Quantitative Section
The Verbal & Quant sections are measured on a scale of 130–170 in 1 point increment and the Analytical Writing is assessed on a scale of 0–6 in half-point increment.
It also consists of a GRE Subject Test along with the basic GRE exam. The subjects are specially for students who would have studied any of these papers in their undergraduate level which include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Psychology, English, etc.
Interestingly, when it comes to eligibility there are no particular criteria to sit for the GRE exam. All you need is a valid passport as an ID proof to be carried to the examination center. Additionally, having a graduate degree from any stream/discipline is considered as a minimum qualification to apply to foreign business universities. Having some work experience is preferable, although not mandatory.
The GRE exam is offered throughout the year and is timed at 3 hours and 45 minutes. The computer-based test can be taken after 21 days from the previous attempt and up to 5 times during a 12-month calendar year. The paper-based test can be taken up to 3 times in a particular year. The examination cost of the GRE test is about US$205 and ETS also offers financial benefits to students from less-privileged socio-economic backgrounds. The GRE score is valid for a period of up to 5 years.
